Wedge vs. Pad – What’s the Difference and Which One Do You Need?
If you’ve been carrying concealed for a while, chances are you’ve come across two popular comfort upgrades: wedges and pads. While they might seem similar at first glance, they serve very different purposes — and knowing when (and why) to use each one can make a big difference in both comfort and concealment.
Let’s break it down.
What’s a Holster Wedge?
A wedge is a piece of foam or molded material that attaches to the bottom-rear of your holster, usually on the muzzle end. Its purpose is to tilt the grip of your gun inward toward your body, helping reduce printing and increase concealment — especially in appendix carry.
Wedges add bulk intentionally to change the angle of your holster. This can improve concealment dramatically, but it also increases how much space the rig takes up inside your waistband — and can sometimes add pressure in the wrong places if not positioned well.
Wedge = concealment tool first, comfort second.
What’s the Plateau Pad?
The Plateau Pad, on the other hand, is a comfort tool first.
It attaches to the inside face of the holster — the part that sits directly against your body — and adds a soft buffer that eliminates hot spots, hard edges, and pressure points. It’s flat and low-profile, so it won’t push the holster outward or affect the ride height or angle.
If your holster is already well-concealed but not all-day comfortable, the Plateau Pad is likely the better upgrade.
Plateau Pad = comfort tool first, with zero impact on concealment.
So, Which One Should You Use?
Here’s how to decide:
-
Use a wedge if...
-
You’re trying to reduce grip printing
-
Your holster tilts away from your body
-
You carry appendix and want better concealment
-
You're okay with a bit more bulk for a tighter tuck
-
-
Use a pad if...
-
Your holster digs into your waist or hip
-
You feel pressure or discomfort during the day
-
You want added comfort without changing how your holster rides
-
You carry strong-side or appendix and need a softer contact point
-
Final Thoughts
Wedges and pads each serve a purpose — but they’re not interchangeable. If your biggest challenge is concealment, a wedge might be the right call. But if your holster is already disappearing well and you’re just tired of the pressure, rubbing, or discomfort? The Plateau Pad is exactly what you need.
